Why should I do outreach?
There are some reasons why scientists should get involved in outreach to the public:
1- The public’s support for science is crucial for science funding see “Scientists, do outreach, or your science dies”
2- Understanding basic biological and scientific issues are important to the public and guide their ability to make informed decisions as individuals and as a society as a whole (e.g. accepting climate change, understanding antibiotic resistance and the importance of vaccination).
3- Talking to the public makes you a better communicator, and these skills are precious to you and your research! They may even broaden your outlook on your research.
4- Break the “mad scientist” stereotype. The public often thinks that scientists are either geniuses, scatter-brained with no social skills or locked up in their labs all day concocting magical potions. Help put a human face on science!
5- Funding agencies increasingly ask for outreach as part of the grant application process. So here is a chance to get it on your CV!
6- It’s fun!
